Winners & Losers: Oscar Nominations
Monkeys, A.I. and snubs. Here are the biggest winners and losers from the Oscar nominations.
Winner: Monkeys in Movies
There were two movies that starred monkeys last year. Both of those movies are now Oscar nominated.
It doesn’t matter for which category - they’re Oscar nominated movies.
If there’s a lesson to learn in the industry, it’s that based on 2024 data, if you choose to make a movie with a monkey protagonist you have a 100% chance of receiving an Oscar nomination.
Loser: A.I.
The Brutalist took a hit for using A.I. to fine tune Hungarian dialogue used in the film. What’s worse? A.I. was also used in Emilia Pérez, but not to fine tune the dialogue. It was used to help an actress reach a certain vocal range in a song.
Talk about a missed opportunity.
Emilia Pérez using A.I. and still putting out a 6/10 product is like a baseball player using steroids to be a good baserunner. If you’re going to use the steroids, you better be hitting homeruns!
For that reason and more, A.I. is one of the big losers.
Winner: People Who Say “Nom(s)”
Big day for these people.
Nominee and nomination are 3 and even 4 syllable words. That’s too long for these people. There are only 24 hours in a day and they gotta make ‘em all count.
Nom, however, is one syllable. EASY!
With all the time these people save by cutting the 2 or 3 extra syllables, they’re probably training for 5Ks, calling loved ones, or learning a new instrument.
Amazing!
Loser: Snubs
Aw man! My snubs! All my snubs!
I wish all of my snubs would’ve been nominated!
Of course, the harsh reality of this cruel world is that if my snubs were nominated, that would’ve pushed other nominees out, creating a whole separate group of snubs.
I love my snubs, though. I just wanted all of my snubs to be nominated. 🥺
Winner: Barbaros
Monica Barbaro was nominated for her role as Joan Baez in A Complete Unknown, and many people are asking the same question: is she related to Michael Barbaro of the New York Times?
Google Trend results went up for both Monica Barbaro and Michael Barbaro after the announcement of her nomination, and while Monica Barbaro does have a brother named Michael, it is not Michael Barbaro of the New York Times.
With the name on many people’s mind currently and through the Oscars ceremony, Barbaros everywhere are up right now.
