In February of 2020, Nick and Vanessa Lachey began running dating experiments and televising them on the streaming platform, Netflix.
Over the last four years, the couple has conducted their trial seven times. Each time with 15 men and 15 women from the same geographic area.
Their question: is love truly blind?
Their finding: hell no.
Out of the couples on the show that get engaged, 3 out of 4 end the engagement or are currently separated, as demonstrated in the below chart:
Nick Lachey elaborates on their findings, saying, "They’re all so awkward when they first meet because they’re on different levels physically sometimes. It’s awful.”
He continues, “You know, we wanted to conduct this study to show that love is blind. We wanted to show that an attractive person could be happy with a less attractive person, but we’re losing hope in that idea the more we run this trial.”
According to the couple, they took a very clinical, scientific approach to the study that has been cut from the Netflix show. Vanessa Lachey elaborates:
“Although Netflix has made this into a typical reality dating show, Nick and I approached this like a real study. We went through the scientific method and everything, but they cut all that stuff from the show."
When asked to comment, a Netflix executive stated:
"They were spending a majority of the budget on this ‘scientific method’ side of the show that we’ve never even aired. So, to clarify, the show is not ending; we’re just cutting their budget for their ‘clinical studies’ whatever that means to them… this is a reality dating show. I don’t know where that part got lost."
After news of the budget cuts, the Lacheys were devastated. Their experiment has come to an end and they’re merely reality hosts now. Nick left us with one last comment:
"We just love love. Even if it is between an ‘ugly’ person and a ‘regular'. That’s what we’ve always wanted to display on the show."
