"Dune: Part 2" was released this past Friday and, as one of the most anticipated movies of the year, I made sure I was first in line.
My journey was different than others in that I was going into this film having read the book [page on Wikipedia]. Compared to the book [page on Wikipedia], I found the film to be a great and faithful adaptation.
I was excited to see what I'd read on the page come to life.
[SPOILER WARNING]
Once the first frame of the Maud'Dib appeared, I couldn't help it: I leaned over to my date and said, "That's the Maud'Dib." "Shh," she replied.
The Maud'Dib is my favorite character from the book [page on Wikipedia] due to its ability to survive in the desert, and due to its tail and big ears. It's a kangaroo mouse, and it's one of the parts that stayed with me the most from the book [page on Wikipedia], so I had to tell my date more.
"It's a kangaroo mouse that can survive in the desert withou-"
"Shh!" she interjected.
"Just keep an eye on him is all I'm saying," I said.
She glared at me. My love and excitement for the Maud'Dib had injected a tension between my date and I. A tension that I was hoping would not carry over to the Cold Stone portion of our date, which would soon follow. Even with that on the line, I had one more fact about the Maud'Dib to share, and I needed her to know.
"The Maud'Dib is able to retain body moisture-"
"Shut up!" she whisper-yelled. "You do this with every f*cking movie! You get obsessive over the creatures and then just tell me about them while I'm watching. I'm over it!"
She stood up and walked out.
My night ended with no date, no Cold Stone, and no one to share my love of the Maud'Dib with. The film, however, sustained a methodical, engaging pace that kept me on the edge of my seat and the performances were masterful.
